Jessica Shanel Unmasked: Model Spotlight

Step into the captivating world of Jessica Shanel, where every photograph tells a story and every pose is an expression of artistry.

With a journey that began in Moreno Valley, California, and now flourishes in Orange County, Jessica’s path in modeling intertwines with tales of resilience, passion, and self-discovery.

As we embark on this exclusive interview, prepare to be inspired by her unwavering commitment to authenticity, empowerment, and creativity.

What inspired you to pursue a career in modeling?

I cannot pinpoint any defining moment. I just remember having an admiration for it for so long; and, at my graduation ceremony for my Master’s degree, I felt proud of that accomplishment; but, I remember thinking, “This isn’t it. There’s something more I want to pursue.” I basically put all creative endeavors on the back burner to focus on my education.

Can you share a memorable experience from your early days as a model?

Last year at The World of Barbie exhibit, a little girl was admiring my outfit from afar. I heard her mother say, “Go ask her.” She approached me for a photo. Afterwards, her mother said, “She has autism. She usually doesn’t approach people.” It was nice to know that just being dressed up as a Barbie helped a child feel comfortable enough to take a photo with me, having never seen or noticed me before.

How has your background in psychology influenced your approach to modeling?

I think that working with different clients over the years on such a deep level has made it easier to adapt to working with different models and photographers. Also, when someone is having a bad day, I don’t take it as personally, understanding that there are various reasons, whether it’s a physical or emotional matter, that could explain someone’s behavior. However, I have also learned how to recognize when someone is giving off a predatory vibe or behaving in a manner that gives off red flags, where I should not just give him or her the benefit of the doubt.

What advice would you give to aspiring models?

I’d say first and foremost, always make sure you feel safe. It’s important to know and communicate your boundaries. Also, don’t underestimate the value of networking. Be careful not to view an event as invaluable because there is no pay. Use discernment about what you might get out of it. You can make life-changing connections and open yourself to several opportunities by attending the right events and/or workshops.

Tell us about a particularly challenging shoot you've encountered and how you overcame .

Interestingly enough, I would say starting off as a hand model. I was brand new to modeling; and, there is so much more to it than I thought. It was for a nail polish company. I was growing impatient with the time it took to try to make my hold on the nail polish bottles look natural while not covering the brand name, showing the sticker at the bottom, and many other things. I just had to learn to listen closely to the people behind the camera. It also helped when I realized that I needed to relax and also enjoy what I was doing to make things look more natural.

How do you balance your modeling and with working in the field of psychology

It can be challenging. I think communicating with my employers is key so that they know if I ever have to leave early or take a day off, it is for an important gig or event. With that of course means having my work completed on time. I also think it is important not to overcommit myself and discern which shoots and events to attend, and knowing when I need to rest and recharge.

Can you share a favorite collaboration experience with Erris or Emmy Larios?

With Erris, (@Glitterthumbscustoms on Instagram), I’d say the 2023 Easter shoot. The makeup, and Easter egg body art were spectacular. With Emmy Larios (@Emzsmakeup, she also did the makeup work on Jessica’s leprechaun photo in the image above ), that’s hard to say because we have worked together so frequently. Maybe the various looks we did in 2022, around Halloween. We did so many back-to-back looks, including, but not limited to, Jessica Rabbit, Roxanne from a Goofy Movie, and Penny Proud from Disney’s The Proud Family. We both love nostalgia; and, she helped me with my many wigs as well as my makeup. It was so fun.

What motivated you to work with My Point of View Photography?

We actually met at an audition for a photography studio, which has since closed. We were both brought on as models for the studio; and, during our first shoot, which was themed, Inked and Edgy, for tattooed models, she mentioned that she also does photography. So, we exchanged information. She now does photography full-time; and. we collaborate often on my freelance shoots, bringing both our dreams into fruition.

How do you incorporate themes and concepts into your modeling projects?

I’m huge on nostalgia. So, many of my concepts from Cosplay ideas or trying to be festive for various holidays. I typically get an idea of what costumes or outfits I want to wear. Then, the makeup artist and I chat about what makeup would look best for the theme or concept.

What role does mental health awareness play in your life and work?

I think I’m intentional about being cognizant of the headspace I am in. For instance, if I’m anxious, I need to ground myself. If I’m agitated, I likely need more sleep. So, sometimes I’ll go to bed significantly early the day before a shoot or event. It is also important to me to collaborate with those who value their own mental health, as well as the mental health of others, by simply being respectful and kind because no one is above anyone;; and, you never know what someone else might be going through.

Describe your experience with pageantry and its impact on your modeling career.

I honestly found out about pageantry through my model coach, Tara Rice. I didn’t expect a class on runway modeling to lead to the opportunity to participate in pageantry. I think it has helped destigmatize pageantry. I thought that most others in pageantry would be catty and self-absorbed. It has been refreshing to see that the true spirit of it is about sisterhood and service. There’s no need for bitterness nor jealousy because it takes immense courage to grace the stage in a pageant, whether or not you walk away with a crown.

How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle as a model?

As a model, I remember that it is important to hydrate and eat healthily. I try to make sure I have a Lara bar, almonds and water with me as I’m on the go so that I keep my energy up without relying on junk food all the time. (i’m not a photographer).

What do you enjoy most about attending modeling workshops and training sessions?

I love making new connections, as well as seeing familiar faces. I also love getting to practice my runway walk, and learn or refamilizarize myself with important information, such as, how to submit to agencies, or how to navigate various situations professionally.

Can you share a funny or memorable moment from your acting classes?

I remember being given a scene which required me to do a Russian accent. Apparently, I did it so well, one of the students thought I was Russian, until I approached him speaking in my normal voice.

What are your top three tips for building successful collaborations?

Mutual respect, communication, and remembering that you are collaborating, not competing. Let’s say you’re shooting with a more experienced model. You can learn new poses for example; and, that person may learn something from you, or become inspired by your style and your journey as well.

How do you stay true to yourself in an industry that often promotes certain standards?

Makeup work done by Emmy Larios @Emzsmakeup

I think I just remind myself that it’s not about being the next Tyra Banks, or whomever. The world doesn’t need a copy of another person. The world needs me and what i bring to the table. For instance, if I was merely trying to emulate someone else, my own creativity, love of nostalgia, and portrayal of characters would likely be pushed aside to attempt to be something or someone I am not.

What excites you most about the future of your modeling career?

I hope to travel throughout the U.S. and overseas. I look forward for opportunities to shoot in various locations, and perhaps shoot with other creative individuals, like an actor I’ve crushed on since 2016.

Can you share a sneak peek of any upcoming projects you're working on?

I love Halloween; so, stay tuned for some bloody good costumes and looks around that time of year *wink*

How do you hope to inspire others through your work?

I just want to show others that you don’t have to put yourself in a box. You can do and be so many things at once. For instance, I got my Masters degree in Counseling Psychology; AND, I pursued modeling. I have also been training in voice over work as well. I also play around with various types of themes. I can do a playful, innocent look, or a more provacative look. We are multi-faceted human beings; and, it is amazing when our endeavors reflect that.
