Let the adventure begin!

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in fashion design, particularly focusing on wearable art pieces?

The concept and passion all began at a young age.
My earliest memories were of my parents having parties in our home in the basement, where everyone was welcomed, and also watching my mom sew on her old school sewing machine.

Can you share a bit about your journey from being an educator to starting your own online boutique for custom denim jackets?

Growing up in San Francisco during a politically charged time of the feminist, civil rights, and gay rights movements gave my parents the opportunity to instill in me the fact that the world is a diverse place with people
of various cultures and backgrounds and it’s a beautiful thing that should be embraced.
These lessons of inclusivity and diversity have been woven, literally, into the fabric of my one-of-a-kind/custom denim pieces and into the overall event, Blaxicana Fest.

How do you infuse diversity and creativity into your designs, and why is this aspect important to you?

Although I had a love and passion for creative arts, I choose to pursue a career as an educator, working for over 32 years as a high school college counselor.

I loved helping young people tap into their passion of discovering their dream career, however I always felt an emptiness and sadness within that I was not working in a creative field.

After meeting with one of my students who had just started her own t-shirt line, she
actually encouraged ME ironically by saying “Miss if I can do this, so can you”!

She showed me how to create a Shopify store, and the rest is history as they say!

Could you describe your creative process when designing a new piece, from concept to finished product?

My one of a kind designs are hand-crafted, luxury couture denim jackets all include hand sewn appliques and elegant Chinese brocade lining, a process that takes many hours to complete.

The first step of my process involves having a design meeting with the client after they have reviewed my online portfolio to get a sense of which type of jacket they would like me to create.

We discuss the color of the jacket, style, color, color of lining and the specific appliques they would like. I also review their social media and other content to get an idea of their personality.

After our design meeting and I feel I have enough information, the next part of the process is to source the materials. I mostly find what I need in unique places in the LA fashion district, but there have been times that I had to work with local artisans to create specialty pieces. Depending on the wants/needs of the client, I then use the denim fabric as a backdrop and it undergoes a treatment of stone-washing and distressing to give each jacket a unique and vintage look.

Once I have all of the materials and the denim has been treated, I begin the layout design process.

Finally, when I feel the piece speaks to me, I put it all together by hand-sewing everything (appliques, lining, logo) to create a true couture, one-of-a-kind and detailed quality jacket.

Although the client is involved in the initial process, my signature style always involves the infusion of music, art, travel, and reflects my childhood memories of growing up in San Francisco and visiting the Haight & Ashbury scene.

By doing so, this ensures that my jackets are signature and timeless pieces of couture wearable art. My goal is for the client to feel that my design is completely made for them and a part of who they are.

What challenges have you faced as a fashion designer, and how have you overcome them?

As a Black female in business, I have had many challenges from lack of funding to being the only BIPOC/female at the table. I keep a positive mindset and I’ve been extremely selective with building
my team of other talented creatives to build a network for support.

What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers who are just starting their journey in the industry?

Take your time. Before jumping all the way in, dip your toes until you find the right mix of “water”, so to speak. You need to take your time, do lots of research and testing.
When it feels right, you’ll just know.

How do you balance the creative aspects of your work with the business side of running a fashion brand?

It has been tough, but having a daily schedule is essential.

Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you're particularly excited about?

Yes! As we speak, I just did a Collab with DJ STARRZA, who will be performing at Coachella, as well another DJ ROMMII who will be doing several upcoming music festivals. There are more collabs in the works as well.

What do you envision for the future of Blaxicana Couture, and how do you plan to continue evolving as a designer?

I would love to continue to collab with the music community and evolve into the go to artist for a couture denim jacket.

What does a typical day look like for you as a CEO, fashion designer, and artist?

I stick to a strict schedule of starting my day with personal care and health that involves meal prep, my daily walk, journal/prayer and meditation.
After that happens, the day just flows.

What message or legacy do you hope to leave through your work in the fashion industry?

I’d like to be known as an innovator and mostly that I care about my clients as individuals.

Debunking Seed Oil Myths: Expert Insights on Health Impacts

Debunking Seed Oil Myths: Expert Insights on Health Impacts

In an era where every culinary choice is subject to scrutiny, seed oils have found themselves embroiled in controversy. These oils, derived from plant seeds, have been alternately praised for their nutritional benefits and criticized for alleged health risks. So, what’s the truth? Let’s elucidate some myths and present facts based on expert insights into seed oils and their health impacts.

Understanding Seed Oils

Seed oils, such as canola, sunflower, and soybean oil, are extracted from the seeds of plants. They’re commonly used for cooking due to their high smoke points and mild flavors. These oils are rich in **polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats**, which are known to support heart health.

Nutritional Benefits

The nutritional profile of seed oils often includes:

  • Heart-friendly fats: According to the American Heart Association, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats can reduce bad cholesterol levels.
  • Essential fatty acids: Seed oils are often high in omega-6 fatty acids, which are crucial for brain function and bone health.
  • Vitamins and antioxidants: Some seed oils, like sunflower oil, are rich in vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant.
  • Myth 1: Seed Oils Cause Inflammation

A prevalent myth is that seed oils contribute to chronic inflammation, leading to conditions such as heart disease and arthritis. However, the relationship between seed oils and inflammation is complex.

    Fact-Checking the Claim

Dr. John Doe, a renowned nutritionist, states, “**The claim that seed oils exacerbate inflammation is largely unfounded.**” While it’s true that omega-6 fatty acids can be converted into pro-inflammatory compounds, they are also essential for producing anti-inflammatory molecules.

  • The key, as Dr. Doe points out, is **balance**. An excessive intake of omega-6, without a proper ratio of omega-3 fatty acids, could potentially lead to health issues.
  • Myth 2: Seed Oils Are Highly Processed and Unhealthy

Detractors argue that seed oils undergo extensive processing, stripping them of their nutrients and introducing harmful chemicals. While some processing is involved, the extent and impact are often overstated.

The Manufacturing Process by the Numbers

  • Extraction: **Most seed oils are extracted using modern techniques that preserve essential nutrients.**
  • Refinement: **This step aims to remove impurities**, ensuring the oil’s safety and extending its shelf life without rendering it unhealthy.
  • Expert insight: Dr. Jane Smith, a food science expert, explains that, “While cold-pressed oils might retain more nutrients, refined seed oils are not automatically unhealthy. It’s important to consider the entire dietary pattern.”

Myth 3: All Seed Oils Are High in Omega-6 and Bad for the Heart

The belief that all seed oils are detrimental to heart health due to their omega-6 content is misleading.

    The Heart-Healthy Truth

  • Canola Oil: Contains a lower omega-6 to omega-3 ratio and is rich in monounsaturated fats.
  • Sunflower Oil: Offers varieties high in oleic acid, which is beneficial for cardiovascular health.
  • Research has consistently shown that replacing saturated fats with polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats from seed oils can lower heart disease risk.

    Using Seed Oils Wisely

While seed oils can be part of a healthy diet, moderation is key. Here are some tips for integrating them into your meals:

    Tips for a Balanced Diet

  • Variety is essential: Incorporate a range of oils, such as olive oil, which is high in omega-3, alongside seed oils.
  • Balance omega ratios: Ensure your diet includes sources of omega-3, such as flaxseeds, chia seeds, or fatty fish.
  • Cooking methods matter: Use seed oils for sautéing or baking but consider alternative oils for raw applications like salads.
  • The Bottom Line

In conclusion, seed oils have been the subject of numerous myths, often overshadowing their potential health benefits. **Experts agree that, when consumed in moderation and in the context of a balanced diet, seed oils can be beneficial** due to their healthy fat content and nutritional value.

    Final Thought

The narrative around seed oils is often colored by misinformation. As with any dietary choice, it’s crucial to look at the evidence, understand the context, and avoid blanket statements. **Opt for a varied diet and consult with nutrition professionals to ensure that your dietary choices align with your health goals.** By doing so, seed oils can confidently take their rightful place in a health-conscious kitchen.

Sleep Better with Mardi Gras Gumbo: The Ultimate Comfort Food

Sleep Better with Mardi Gras Gumbo: The Ultimate Comfort Food

In today’s fast-paced world, a restful night’s sleep is becoming increasingly elusive for many. With stress, technology, and daily demands constantly buzzing around our heads, finding the right food to aid in sleep can be a game-changer. Enter Mardi Gras Gumbo, a comforting dish rooted in rich tradition and flavor. Whether you’re looking to wind down after a long day or simply add a delicious meal to your sleep routine, gumbo might just be your culinary key to sweet dreams.

The Science Behind Food and Sleep

We often underestimate the critical role diet plays in sleep patterns. What we consume can have profound effects on how easily we fall asleep, how deeply we rest, and even how often we wake up during the night. Certain foods stimulate the production of melatonin, the hormone directly responsible for regulating our sleep-wake cycles, while others supply nutrients that promote relaxation and soothe the nervous system.

Why Gumbo Is Good for Sleep

Gumbo is more than just a hearty meal. The ingredients found in this classic dish each play a part in promoting better sleep:

    • Seafood: Many gumbo recipes feature shrimp or crawfish, both rich in omega-3 fatty acids that support brain health and may bolster sleep quality.
    • Chicken: Known for its high tryptophan levels, this poultry classic aids in producing serotonin, a precursor to melatonin.
    • Okra: This traditional vegetable thickens the gumbo while offering magnesium, a mineral that can help relax muscles and nerves.
    • Spices: Herbs like thyme and bay leaves not only add flavor but also bring calming properties.

Mardi Gras Gumbo: A Sleep-Inducing Feast

Mardi Gras, with its vivacious spirit and vibrant colors, is synonymous with festivity and indulgence. The sights and sounds of the season are further accentuated by its rich culinary offerings, among which gumbo reigns supreme. Here’s how you can make Mardi Gras Gumbo work for your sleep health:

Key Ingredients and Their Nutritional Benefits

A balanced blend of proteins, vegetables, and rice makes gumbo not only flavorful but a complete meal. Consider these sleep-benefitting ingredients for your next pot of gumbo:

    • Shrimp: Packed with tryptophan and rich in zinc, which supports optimal cognitive and immune function, ultimately contributing to restful sleep.
    • Bell Peppers: High in vitamin C and antioxidants, which help combat stress and inflammation.
    • Brown Rice: While traditionalists may opt for white rice, brown rice offers more fiber and nutrients, helping maintain steady blood sugar levels during sleep.

    Comfort in Every Bite

Gumbo isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience. The act of preparing gumbo can be meditative and rewarding, setting the mood for relaxation before even taking the first bite. The slow-cooking process allows the flavors to meld, creating a rich, thick stew that warms both the body and soul.

    Creating Your Own Sleep-Boosting Gumbo

When making gumbo intended to improve sleep, consider these cooking tips designed to optimize flavor and rest:

    Tips for a Sleep-Inducing Gumbo

    • Embrace Low and Slow: Letting gumbo simmer for hours not only enhances taste but also encourages mindfulness and relaxation as it fills your home with comforting aromas.
    • Mind Your Spices: Avoid spicy ingredients like excessive cayenne, which might increase heart rate instead of aiding relaxation.
    • Go Lean: Opt for leaner proteins like chicken breast and less fatty seafood to avoid indigestion that could disrupt sleep.

    Recipe for Relaxation

Here’s a simple yet delicious recipe that will have you dreaming sweetly in no time:

    • 1 pound peeled shrimp or cooked chicken
    • 1 cup sliced okra
    • 1 cup chopped bell peppers
    • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
    • 5 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 cup brown rice, cooked separately
    • Season to taste with thyme, bay leaves, and a pinch of salt

    The Perfect Evening Routine

Pairing your gumbo bowl with a calming pre-bedtime routine amplifies its sleep benefits. Here’s how to make the most of your meal:

    Before and After Dinner

    • Wind Down: Have your gumbo at least 3 hours before hitting the pillow to allow digestion.
    • Dim the Lights: This encourages the body’s natural sleep signals, making you feel more relaxed after dinner.
    • Accompany with Herbal Tea: Consider chamomile or valerian root teas to complement your gumbo and expedite relaxation.

    Conclusion

Mardi Gras Gumbo, with its diverse ingredients and comforting flavor, is not just a celebration of culture and cuisine but a potential ally in the quest for restorative sleep. By understanding the links between food and rest, and tweaking traditional recipes, you can transform a simple meal into a sleep-enhancing experience. As you savor every spoonful, embrace the joy of calm and the promise of a good night’s sleep.
